My name is Roger, and welcome to Cain’s Woodshed! Here I will talk about all I have learned about the wood I work with in my shop.
When I was growing up our only heat source in the house was wood, so I never gave much thought to the actual beauty of it. I was just looking forward to spring when I didn’t have to cut, chop, or haul it around anymore. The going joke was that my name was not Roger…it was “Get Wood,” or “Gosh Darn it,” or the other variation that I will not say here... It was not until I got into high school and had to take a woodshop class as a requirement. That is really when I began the woodworking journey, and it has continued from there. I’ve dabbled and learned along the way how to work with wood and make it into something to admire!
Now I love to take the time to look at each piece of lumber or log and ponder. What should I do with it? I also really enjoy talking about the different wood I use, and how I came about finding it with others. This has led me to write this blog after several friends suggested it.
So, in each future post, I will pick one species of wood and tell a story of how I came about finding it, how I looked over the lumber or log to decide what to make with it, and what my favorite finished piece is. I will touch on where the species of wood comes from, the best uses, what I like about it, and so on. I hope to keep it informative and entertaining at the same time.
